I started in the field of education in 2001, when my youngest went to first grade, by becoming a para to the kindergarten teacher. The next year student numbers did not justify a para so I was moved to the technology para position. That is when I began to discover a love for all the things that could be done with technology in education and for helping teachers utilize tech tools.
As I continued working with students and teachers, I developed a passion for doing more and went back to school to get my bachelor's degree in elementary education. In the meantime, I moved to the district office and began to help teachers district-wide with technology. August 2015 I was given my dream job of coaching teachers in bringing technology into their classroom with a little bonus perk: I am the wellness coordinator for staff district-wide. I LOVE my job and all of the people I work with.
But.... this video, "
What Most Schools Don't Teach," ignited another passion in me! The passion for introducing as many people to computer science as possible!
Code.org has been a big help to me as I recruited amazing people to help me start tech clubs in each of the schools in our district! I have also looked into
Google's CSFirst and other avenues that offer free curriculum for learning and teaching coding!
That teaching job I mentioned...
Earlier this semester, I got a call from our middle school principal telling me that they were going to have a long-term sub in their Skilled and Technical Sciences position and would need a computer for this person. I assured him I would take care of it and then he said something I never would have imagined:
"I just wanted to let you know this position is open and I think you would be a good fit." Honestly, I was so shocked I don't think I even gave an intelligible answer. I believe I thanked him for thinking of me and ended the call. This really threw me for a loop. I thought my destiny was already decided. I had just finished student teaching and college classes. I was just getting into the groove, going around getting teachers excited about different technology, etc. Also, our wellness program was really starting to take off and I loved every minute of that too! So, I didn't give much thought to the job.
Fast forward to the
NETA conference and a conversation with a college classmate (remember I just graduated) and his applying for the STS job. I thought he was perfect for the job and I told him so. He informed me he thought the same thing about me! The next week, another educator brought up the job to me and told me I really should check into it. OK! So I did.
What a great gig!! I would be able to come into this classroom that currently has 15 modules of various sorts and transform it into whatever I want it to be! I could develop my own modules and make it as much about computer science as anything. It already has some robotic components and more just waiting to be added. A full cart of chrome books and a mentor/collaborator right next door! I get along great with the other people in the department, both the high school and middle school level. What could be better???
Well.... I LOVE my job! I love the freedom, the excitement in the kids' eyes when they explore new technology. My "rockstar status" when kids see me around town. The excitement the teachers express when they realize incorporating new technology is really not as scary as it seems. The relationships I have with just about everyone in the entire school district! The conversations and collaboration that have developed around wellness and the community connections. So, I prayed hard about it and weighed the pros and cons and decided that I will stay where I am and support the new teacher that gets into that position with every resource that I can find!
BUT... they have not found anyone for that position.
So, as things stand, if no suitable replacement is found, I may become the new Skilled and Technical Sciences teacher at the middle school. Guess what! That would NOT be horrible. A little scary, yes. Super exciting, yes! Super sad to leave what I'm doing, yes! So what I am going to do is continue on doing what I am doing and pray that God leads the powers that be to put me in the place that is best for the district and for me. Then: Bloom where I am planted!
My point in writing this blog is to encourage people to get into computer science! Embrace it, explore it, enjoy it and see where it takes you. I do not know yet where it will take me. Even if I am not given the STS job, I plan to start a CS-First club and a
Girls Who Code Club! Computer science is vital to developing college and career-ready learners in this 21st century! Get on board!
